The name of Manoj Bajpayee’s character in the film is Ram Charan. He is from Bihar. A very domineering man. Everyone knows him as Bhaiya Ji. There was a time when Bhaiya Ji used to change the government. Now even though he has stopped raising his hand, but wherever he passes, people lower their eyes on him. Bhaiya Ji’s innocent younger brother is murdered. His mother says that the blood should not be allowed to cool down. We have to take revenge. Bhaiya Ji reaches the mansion roaring and says, ‘Now there will be no request, there will be massacre’. Who does he say this to? The answer is Chandrabhan. He is an influential man. His son, under the influence of alcohol and power, kills Bhaiya Ji’s brother. And Bhaiya Ji now wants his revenge. How the battle of revenge is completed is the rest of the story.

For the first half hour, I was sitting on the edge of my seat watching the film. I already knew that this is a template masala film. Still, it was nice to see that a masala film should be like this. Your hero is not just going out and creating havoc. Something very bad happens to him. You sympathize with him. You are with him in his fight. Further, whatever punches he throws beyond the bounds of law, they will have your stamp of approval. Till here everything was fine. But after that, the writing of the film spread so much that it became difficult to wrap it up. When even your action sequences start to seem boring, then it is a matter of great problem.

The film revolves around the murder of Bhaiya Ji’s brother. The rest of the story revolves around that. There are two ways to look at the motive of revenge. One is that Bhaiya Ji was so attached to his younger brother that he would move heaven and earth for it. But the film could not give proper space to that aspect. There should have been some scenes that would show the bonding between the two brothers. The other way is to look at it from the mother’s point of view. Whenever Bhaiya Ji’s character comes down on his knees, the mother reminds him about revenge. The film is not able to fix its center, whose motive is this revenge, mother’s or Bhaiya Ji’s. There is a rule for writers that no extra scene should be written. Every scene of yours should take the narrative forward in some way or the other.

There is a scene where the mother feels that her son’s soul has not found peace. Then someone advises her to throw something related to the son into the water. At this point there is a flashback where the mother is playing cricket with her son. The mother takes out his bat and throws it into the water. You are sitting in the hall wondering what was the point of this. If this scene was not there, what difference would it have made to the story.

Generally, there is not much scope for acting in action films. In such a situation, Suvinder Vicky, who played Chandrabhan, and Zoya Hussain delivered as much as was written on paper. Manoj Bajpayee’s work has come out well in some emotional scenes. There is a scene where Bhaiya Ji is watching his brother’s body burning. He wants to quickly take it out of the fire. But he knows that this is not possible. When the body turns into ashes completely, Bhaiya Ji touches the ashes. His hands burn. He is crying while holding the ashes to his chest. The pain of burning from the ashes and the pain of never being able to hear his brother’s laughter, both come together on his face.

‘Bhaiya Ji’ was made by taking a typical masala Telugu film as a template. The hero’s introduction starts to blow. That is his being a step-son in the eyes of his mother. Most of the filmography of Mahesh Babu and Ravi Teja is covered in these two lines. Well, despite this aspect, this could have been an entertaining film. But it loses its sense of space. Ram Charan lives in Bihar and Chandrabhan in Delhi. But after a point, Delhi and Bihar become one. The surprising thing is that you stop being affected by this. This is not good news for any film.
